Barahona is located about 200 km northwest of the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. The magnificent nature of this region, steep cliffs, secluded beaches and unexplored places are what really attracts people here.
There are many unusual places here: National Parks, Lake Enriquillo and the Magnetico Field.
Barahona is a small Caribbean town with a provincial charm. The history of the city dates back to the early 1800s. In the early 19th century, the first settlers, consisting of several families of wealthy traders in valuable wood, settled here. The city is very interesting for its colonial-style houses. Central Park, the cathedral, the central sugar plantation, cactus, vegetable, banana plantations, a long street of malekon running along the shore, a very interesting market.
The beaches of this province are beautiful, deserted and unspoiled. Many of them have rocky shores. The most beautiful of them is the beach of Puerto Alejandro, located behind the village of La Canoa.
After visiting Baraona, you should visit Polo Magnetico, a mysterious place, the so-called Field of Miracles, which makes it possible for your car, left in neutral, to move up the slope on its own. It is said to be due to a powerful magnetic field, but locals claim that sometimes at night the mountain emits a strange light and makes disturbing thunder. Polo Magnetico is located in the Sierra de Baoruco National Park, which produces the best coffee in the country.
And probably the most interesting thing in this region is Lake Enriquillo, which is 35 km long and 10 km wide. It is the only saltwater lake in the world with crocodiles. There are three towns on the lake: La Islita, Barbarita, and Cabritos, the latter of which is not only the largest but also the National Park of the same name. It is here that you can meet the rinkon lizard, which has a red cornea.
The nature of this place is unlike any other corner of the Dominican Republic: giant cacti and flat trees, scorching sun, many iguanas, long-legged egrets, pink flamingos and crocodiles, although the latter can be found not often.
On the side of the mountain next to Lake Enriquillo, there is a cave with rock paintings by the Taino Indians (these drawings are called Las Caritas).
There are healing sulfur springs near the lake. The water in the springs is crystal clear, cold and tonic. It is believed that bathing in these amazing thermal waters gives you vigor and health.
To get the full experience, you should visit the market in Jiman, which is located on the border with Haiti. This place reflects the life of the western part of the island (the Republic of Haiti), where it is better not to appear for a white person.
